2 and 1/2 hours to go

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

In London. Overrun by man u and barca football fans. Kickoff not long now. Heading out of hotel in a min. For the americans…the champions league final is watched by slightly more people than watch the superbowl and my team is in it and it is in my country.

Think of it like if the Cowboys making it to the superbowl last year…..

Sitting at SFO…already delayed. But, I figure that I’ve got until Saturday to find my way through, around, over or under the cloud.

Come on Man Utd….Giggsy and all.

London bound….

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Tomorrow…I’m on that plane heading over to the home of the Champions League final. Trying to meet up with some people when I’m there – although as usual, I’m late in making arrangements…sorry!

Meeting a founder of a really fascinating company before I leave – I’m excited about the meeting just to hear about his vision.

Party happening at my house on June 11th – if you’ve not received an invite and want to come and help us have fun, please let me know. I’m still trying to sort out all those personal address books etc. so please don’t take it personally.

And my major achievement over the weekend….I managed to procure and hang on the wall a glass white board. I hear the sniggering already but, it was actually really difficult. I had to drill two of the holes twice because they were in the wrong location and even then, I sort of had to put the screws in at a weird angle to line up with the holes on the board. Fortunately Jody didn’t notice any of that – I managed to hide it all with the board.

The second most important event of the year

Oh no! As a result of me going to England next week ti watch the Champions League final, I am going to miss…..

the opening day of The Hangover part2

I had these big plans to invite the dentist, fat jesus and pretty boy and all go together (you all know who you are!)

Now I will have to suffer through the Facebook updates until I can get back and watch it ASAP.

Wembley here we come

Champions League Final tickets….lots of money

Flights to London….reasonable (thank you Virgin miles)

Hotel in London….ouch

Watching the two greatest football teams in the world battle it out and Man U winning…..priceless.

I’m excited!

Don’t you love ATT Wireless…not

Monday, May 16th, 2011

So, because I get horrible ATT reception at my house, I decided to give them yet more money and buy a Microcell from them. Of course, these cannot be bought online they have to be purchased from one of their stores.

I arrive at the store and there is a lady that “checks me in” and then tells me that there are 7 people ahead of me waiting to be served.

What? I am trying to give you more money to buy a simple product from you and I have to wait for 7 people ahead of me!! Is this like a trendy restaurant or something? And by the way, it’s 1.30pm on a Monday – not like it’s peak time.

Wow – customer service….what’s that? I guess wireless companies make so much money that they can treat their customers like garbage.

Oh yeah….5-3!

Friends came round this afternoon and it ended up in a game of football (soccer). 2 dads, both in their forties that have been known to partake in the occasional party versus 4 kids, ranging in age from 9 to 11.

And, despite going 2-0 down early on, and despite us nearly calling 911 because the dads couldn’t breath, we triumphed and sent those young pretenders back to learn a few more skills.

The rest of the weekend consisted of drinks with great friends Friday night, shopping for the house, watching Man Utd win the league, watching flag football including 3 touchdowns for Marcus…and then topped off by the breath taking Monte Sereno dads vs kids soccer.

This week I have a huge long list of things to achieve and I also have 7 meetings booked with investors/company founders/banks.

But…the most important thing….where am I going to get my Champions League Final tickets from?

So completely unproductive

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

I remember reading an article a couple of months ago that discussed what happened when entrepreneurs quit their jobs. The article described how they usually have long lists of things that they want to achieve (first on the list is always getting fit and losing weight).

But, when the reality strikes, what they really do is:

a) Chores around the house

b) Waste time on the computer

c) Eat unhealthily and don’t go to the gym

Hmm…sounds strikingly similar to myself. The article then also says that you must set an agenda for the week and stick to it…be as disciplined as you were when you were working.

But…inside of house is painted, furniture in main room has been swapped, finally got some outdoor furniture in place, getting the back yard sorted.

It’s really exhausting doing all these chores…you have to make phone calls, explain to people what you want and then write checks at the end of it.

No wonder I’ve got no energy left to work out!

Hmm….jobs fill your day!

Had a great week last week, a good mix of personal as well as looking around for whatever the next hot opportunity is. Attended the Goldman Sachs Cloud conf on Wednesday and managed to catch up with many folks that I know. It was kind of amusing, a couple of VCs were on stage and asked “reasons that they decide to invest in a company”.

They both talked about the passion and commitment of the founder/CEO, how for that person it must extend beyond office time, they must love what they do. Funny….on my “time off” I was sitting at a Goldman cloud conference…..I guess I could be one of those people!

Huge congrats to Man Utd….love it! I have my flights booked to England for the Champions League Final, now all I need is a ticket (the original seller reneged on our deal because they got a better offer). So, anyone with 2 tickets to the Champions League final on the 28th….I’ll pay!

This week, doing many things around the house. It’s amazing how much stuff there is to do, “when you have time to do it”. All those things that I’d been putting off, I’m now doing.

Also, plenty more meetings this week. I am starting to think that I should get a season ticket at the Rosewood Hotel restaurant on Sand Hill….I am there once or twice every week.

Gotta go….walking the kids to school in a short while and oldest girl is still in bed!

Dixmeister

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

Had lunch with the man himself today (for those of you that don’t know, that would be Nimsoft’s ex-VP WW Sales Dixon).

What amazed me was that he was “dressed for the occasion”…there was I in shorts, sandals and a t-shirt and Dix in slacks and a jacket. The Englishman that’s become so Silicon Valley huh!

Anyhow, great lunch, great conversation both business and personal, I know that we’d both love to work together again if it works out but we did make an absolute commitment to get drunk together soon!

I made myself a “honey-do” list at the beginning of the week and so far I’ve managed to do….”none of the above”.

Tomorrow I’m at Goldman’s Cloud conference and then on Thursday I have four separate meetings. After that, I will be shopping with the missus on Friday….we’ve finally got to get our backyard furnished.

By the way, I cannot believe how much activity their is in Silicon Valley right now. Very exciting.
