Getting some really good stuff going on multiple fronts – getting ready to roll

Yin and Yang

Another interesting day.

Ups and downs – what a roller coaster this last week has been.

Heads down today

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Buried in Excel, PPnt, Word today….working from home and cranking. Fortunately Verizon have provided a semi-stable 1Mbps DSL line….roll on Saturday when I get my 12 Mbps Comcast connection.

Zynga results were a shocker….first GroupOn and now Zynga. Maybe that should be a new rule….you have to have your S1 filed for at least 6 months before you IPO so that investors can see a couple of quarterly updates in real time before deciding to buy the IPO. Uh oh – that’s not a popular thing to say I’m sure.

Yesterday was a busy day….some really good stuff and some mediocre. I remember at the end of the quarter in sales we used to judge each day Red, Yellow or Green depending on how things unfolded that day but ultimately of course, the only day you really care about is when the fat lady sings.

The journey continues…

Yesterday was  a day almost entirely devoted to partner meetings at VCs. I did 3 meetings in total which overall I was very pleased with.

The meetings consisted of a short PPnt deck plus a really sexy looking prototype of the product. I must say a big thanks to the folks that worked on the prototype – it really rocked.

I’ve just received all the company formation docs of which there are many – will need to check those and get them signed today in between the 5 meetings that I have scheduled.

Our plan is still to get started full time on Monday – initially we will be locking ourselves in a room for a couple of days to really flesh out the product requirements fully and get it documented so that we can start to work on architecture etc.

1 done, 2 to go…next one starting in 10 mins

Wish me luck :)

Our biggest issue right now is…

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

Broadband – can you believe it? Verizon, despite sending technicians to my home 5 or 6 times over the last 3 weeks, cannot give me a stable DSL line. Each time I repeat the same dance….call them….spend an hour on the phone…..they can’t fix it so they schedule a technician….wait in all day for the technician….he “fixes” it but within 2 hours of him leaving it’s broken again.

Verizon have to be close to the worst customer service in the world. We rely on broadband today for so much that I need a service provider that can treat it as such – so I ordered Comcast business service.

And…the irony is that our lead developer is having exactly the same broadband issues. He is having to drive to the local cafe to get reliable internet service (which doesn’t help people that want to work into the wee hours of the morning).

Anyhow, on the positive front we’ve managed to get the presentation deck ready for tomorrow, we have a super sexy looking prototype nearly done, the company documents are in the process of being produced, I am talking to the banks and the lawyers to get it all sorted out and…looks like we have an agreed deal for the domain name that we want. We have a verbal agreement at least…now to get it papered and executed.

Monday is a big day – two final partner presentations to two VCs. I need to bring my A-game!

If yesterday was D-Day, then today is H-day

Only the former Nimsoft shareholders and option holders will know what I mean by H-day but….congrats – a job really well done!

Thanks for your support.

4am and looking at designs

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

I actually get so excited and motivated by the new company that I get up in the middle of the night to do stuff on it.

Anyhow, yesterday was a good day – got the company incorporated, got the tax id, got the NDA forms, had a lot of interest from folks in participating in F&F, moved the prototype along significantly, started putting the final investor deck together, bought a printer, cleaned out the office.

Today – I have a couple of unrelated meetings today but things that I want to get achieved are:

(a) Get the company named – we have a name in mind but are negotiating with the current owners of the domain – we need to either get this done or move on to a new name

(b) Get the bank engaged – probably go with Silicon Valley Bank but maybe Comerica

(c) Call with designer and engineer this morning. We need to look at her wireframes and then start to layer them into the prototype.

(d) Get the investor deck to a reasonable state

As soon as I can get the company name and domain sorted out, then we can move on to other items.

We’re planning to make a lot of use of collaboration solutions: probably use Google Apps for email, groups, IM, maybe even video conf (they have that in hangouts now). We will probably use something like basecamp and then use Skype for calling and maybe video as well. Meet.Me is great for adhoc screen sharing

One thing that I want to achieve in the new company is to substantially reduce email traffic internally. Already we are hunting to find things and have different docs at different versions etc. because email is a horrible medium.

Instead, we are going to birth a culture of using discussion groups/internal social for most things that would otherwise be email. I’d like us to all keep an EMPTY email inbox and not have folders….instead everything is stored in the discussion groups.

Any suggestions as to products to use for this? We looked at Socialcast but it seems so very basic (cannot set up separate threads) that I don’t think it meets our needs – I’m actually wondering whether Google Groups would do this? But…would be nice to have an iPad interface and maybe an offline mode. Anyhow, I’ll take all suggestions…

D-Day has arrived – I’m going back to start-up land!

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Today was decision day for me. I have withdrawn from the CEO searches that I was talking to and have decided to commit myself to the start-up idea that I have.

I have been working with a lead engineer (someone I worked with many years ago) who is putting some of the early pieces in place to turn my vision into a reality.

We are not yet funded, but from the multiple conversations that I have had with a select group of VCs, I am confident that we can get funding. Each VC has pretty much said “This is a big idea in a big market and you are approaching it in a very smart way” – and I/they also cannot find anyone else doing this.

I have to go back to the investors next week and do the “partner presentation” – which is the final approval step leading to a term sheet. We also hope to carve a piece out for some friends and family – I think a maximum of 5 f&f participants and I already have 2 committed and 1 possible.

Meanwhile, we are cracking on. I think I’m going to use this blog as our own diary to share our journey much as I did with the Nimsoft journey, but I didn’t start blogging until the company was already ¬†reasonable size.

Right now it is me, an engineer, some technical proof points, a PPnt deck, a prototype and a big idea and lots of passion and excitement.

We incorporated the company this morning, now I need to get Tax ID, bank account etc etc.

I’m also “throwing my fiancee” out of the home office as I will be taking this over – need to actually get a working printer maybe now as well :)

Excited would be the emotion of the day.

Final thought is (a) Don’t ask me the company name because we don’t have one yet and (b) Don’t ask me what we are doing because I cannot say.

Anyone know a really good user experience person….

I have a full spec available but I’m looking for the best of the best. Someone that is interested in working with an early stage start-up in a huge market. iPad/iPhone are obviously key platforms for us among others.

Anyhow, email me, garyread@yahoo.com if you are interested or you know anyone that is interested.
